The major changes include a doubling in the use of inorganic nitrogen, a switch from hay to silage, and increased stocking densities, particularly of sheep. Web1.1 Lowland grassland features qualify a large number of SSSIs and SACs in England, Scotland and Wales, and also ASSIs and SACs in Northern Ireland. The features include a wide range of semi-natural plant communities on acid, neutral and calcareous soils, together with a variety of rare and scarce individual plant and animal taxa.
